Pumps are a wide category hydraulic component. They can be found in multiple forms such as Gear, Piston, Vane, Bent axis, Diaphragm, Hand pump, Axial piston and Centrifugal to name a few and the most common.

Due to the wide variety the selection of pump will need to be tailored to the application depending on flow, pressure, oil selection and control requirements.

A piston pump for instance can have the flow adjusted to suit the application and respond to feedback from a valve to shut off supply if maximum pressure is reached. This type of pump however, wouldn’t suit a heavy gear oil for this reason and instead a gear pump might be used. A gear pump typically has a fixed non-adjustable flow and not usually used in high pressure applications.
