Cylinders are widely used throughout the agricultural, industrial and mining industries. Selecting the right one for the application, so it gives trouble free operation throughout its life is a critical decision. Cylinders are typically used in double acting, single acting, phasing and sequenced applications.

Single acting applications – Typically where the cylinder will retract under its own weight. Such as clamping, positioning, and lifting (House jacking). 

Double acting applications – Push and Pull applications where the cylinder will be actuated in both directions. Usually in material handling, industrial automation, and on construction machinery.

Phasing applications – Similar to sequence and double acting cylinders. Phasing cylinders are designed to lift a load in a synchronised movement with other similar cylinders. This is commonly seen on airseeding equipment and applications were lifting heavy objects evenly is required.

Sequenced applications – Though not a specific type of cylinder. This application is where a combination of cylinders and relief valves may be utilised to create a staged actuation. For instance, where a double acting cylinder reaches end of stroke it will then actuate the next cylinder. Think lifting a heavy load and then locking a cylinder in place to prevent further movement.
